Anonymous asked: You are an inspiration to me, i am also out to my college teammates and coaches! but without some of your inspirational words i would still be hiding! thank you!

Thank you so much! Good for you for being out - that helps others in your community more than you know. Good luck with everything!

Anonymous asked: Nice to see another young, out college woman who is working hard to make some small change in some small way (...or big change in big ways - that works too) Mind if I ask what you've got planned for the summer? :)

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. I’m actually moving to Boston to make some money while I continue to blog and write!

My first piece for The Huffington Post, about a hate crime that happened at Bryant University the day I spoke to classes about being an out LGBT college athlete. Check it out here!

WAGS 330: Journal Entry Reflection & Statement

Reflection:

Looking back on my journal entries for class this semester was fun and interesting because it caused me to reconsider how many outlets that influence our ideas of identity - I ended up choosing to write about a different type of outlet each time: personal experience, advertising, literature, film, and music videos. Writing these journal entries made me conscious of how important it is to look more closely at each of these canons, not just for examining the topic of Black Sexualities, but also for examining my own life and breaking down exactly how each type of outlet can influence it. I think, in this day and age, we are flooded constantly with different types of media, and stopping to look more closely is always a valuable thing to do.

Statement:

Overall, this class was really enjoyable for me because it examined an area of gender studies I’d touched on in other classes, but never extensively discussed. I loved the diversity of the material (in both type and subject matter) and the frankness with which students discussed it in class. I would love to keep studying this topic both because I find it interesting, and because I think, now more than ever with the explosion of hip-hop in white, often upper middle-class culture, examining the discourse around black identity is crucial to understanding the future of white identity as well.
